Daniel Escandell-Montiel
The traditional Spanish cavalry world has transmitted us an extensive legacy of myths, legendary creatures, literary characters and historical events that have had different impact in our cultural and popular imaginary. In the specific case of videogames, there is a strong tradition of presence of the Anglo-Saxon Middle Ages, but what is the space occupied by our tradition? In this article, we answer this question and analyse how our tradition has been re-encoded by developers outside our culture, taken as basis and inspiration by national studios. We also focus on impact and possibilities of videogames as a cultural item from the point of view of the re-encoding and the construction in this industry of our cultural heritage forged during the Middle Ages.

To accomplish that, we have done an introduction to the issue and after that we have discussed the main articles and books written in Spain, which mainly address the videogames reception by society and we have done a comparison between the topics we have developed in Spain with the topics analysed in the United Kingdom, which are wider. We have finished with a conclusion in which we have sum up some of the main issues aroused from our analysis.

Here we made a comparison between different historical battles with movie adaptation and several battles filmed in the HBO show Games of Thrones. The battle that we choose for this paper are The Battle of the Red Cliff, The Military Conquest of Valencia by El Cid Campeador, The Battle of Stirling's Bridge and The Battle of Rorke's Drift. This historical battle are compared with several battles on Games of Throne, these battles are The Battle of Blackwaters, The Battles of the Wall, The Battle of the Bastard and The Siege of Invernalia by the White Walkers. We can appreciate different similarities Historical also in several examples about Medieval Literature. Also, we do a comparison with different subjects about History of China, one of the biggest absent in the educational system, but vital in the development and influence to understand today's world and geopolitical situation.

The medieval theme has been a constant in the world of comics since the appearance of Foster’s Prince Valiant. The comic is not different in this from other communicative and artistic media with broad diffusion, such as the cinema or the novel. It is easy to identify mutual influences between theme. In the same way as these media, the comic has not been freed from the topical view of the Middle Ages that society has. It can be found comics with Medieval atmosphere, where Middle Age is a mere stage due to its exoticism and mysterious appeal. On the other hand, there are historical comics, which claim to be more reliable, with varying degrees of verisimilitude. The latter can be used for the teaching of history, but they tend to be boring because of the accumulation of data, losing the entertaining comic essence. The article also presents a brief overview of the main titles set in the Middle Ages.
