Obituary Preview: Carol J. Loritz, 82, of Escanaba, passed away early Sunday morning, April 28, 2024 at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

She was born on July 15, 1941 in Escanaba, daughter to John J. and Viola E. (Gannon) Dubord.

On January 26, 1974, Carol married Alvin R. Loritz in Escanaba. They have lived in Escanaba the majority of their lives besides a brief time that they resided in Florida.

Carol enjoyed going to the casino, shopping, and loved dogs. She was a member of the hearing-impaired group in Escanaba.

Among survivors include her husband, Alvin of Escanaba; two children, Linda (Mike) Derusha of Plainfield, IL and David Loritz of Escanaba; grandchildren, Anthony Derusha (Staci Tepper), Christian Derusha, and Brandon Loritz; two brothers, Ronald Dubord and Richard (Laurie) Dubord; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Andrew Loritz; daughter in law, Sharon Loritz; and brother, Robert.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 1st from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating.

Burial will be in Norway Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Allen Richard Rhode, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Wilson, MI on April 22, 2024.

He was born September 25, 1932 in Gourley Twp. son of Florian and Dagmar (Erickson) Rhode.

Allen proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On August 3, 1957, Allen married the former Carol Carlson in Milwaukee, WI. He resided in Greenfield, WI for most of his life and moved back to his hometown two years ago where he resided with his nephew Paul Rhode and wife Diane. Allen was a self-employed mason until his retirement. Allen enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Allen is survived by his brother, Blaine Rhode; and sisters, Betty Waldo and Bernice Simonetti.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florian and Dagmar Rhode; wife, Carol (Carlson) Rhode; son, Kenneth Rhode; brothers, Florian Rhode, Hubert Rhode, Robert Rhode, Clifford Rhode, Howard Rhode, Raymond Rhode, Floyd Rhode, and Gerald Rhode, and his sister, Irene Rhode.

Burial and military honors will be held on a later date.

Obituary Preview: Shane M. Flath, 47, of Escanaba, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, April 15, 2024.

He was born on January 7, 1977 in Escanaba, son to Robert A. and Jo L. (Palequin) Flath. Shane attended Holy Name School and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1996.

Shane had a passion for anything with a motor and liked speed. He loved working on his dirt bike, race car, and 4-wheeler always trying to get them to go faster. Shane and his dad always tinkered with engines which helped him become a self-taught mechanic. He loved his property which was adjacent to his parents. Riding the trails and being outdoors was always something Shane enjoyed doing. He loved all animals especially his dogs, Mya and Diego. Shane’s pride, joy and most important love is with his beloved daughter, Carly.

Shane was currently employed with EMP as a product technician. Prior, he had owned and operated Custom Car Care, worked in the sales and parts department for Riverside Auto and also Nortrack.

Among survivors include his 11-year-old daughter, Carly of Escanaba; his parents, Robert and Jo Flath of Escanaba; sister, Bobbie (Gene) Shoemaker of Mooresville, NC; nieces, Miranda and Hannah Shoemaker; of Mooresville, NC; partner, Kristy Lemerand of Escanaba; aunts and uncles, Debbie (Mike) Britton, Elaine (Mark) Cousineau, Lois (Dan) Forrester, and Bill Flath; lifelong friend, Mike Chapla; and several cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Lois Palequin and Don and Marilyn Flath; and aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 23rd from noon - 1:15 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will take place at 1:15 p.m. with Rev. Rick Courier officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Obituary Preview: Irene Ann Andzejewski, 92, of Bark River, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.

She was born on July 13, 1931 in Perronville, daughter to Valenty and Theodoria (Remiszewski) Adydan. Irene graduated from Bark River-Harris High School.

Over the years, Irene worked with production at Birds Eye, was a retail clerk at Red Owl and Glenn’s Market, and lastly as a deli clerk at Super One Foods until her retirement.

Irene had a contagious personality and smile. She loved people and enjoyed life to the fullest. She will always be remembered for her love of dancing, her favorites being line dancing and polka dancing. She always cherished the time she spent with her family.

She was a long-time resident of Perronville and was very active with St. Michael’s Church before their closure. Irene could always be found cleaning the church, taking care of the altar decorations and always organized the music for the parish picnic.

She currently was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Wells.

Among survivors include her children, Duane (Cheryl) Andzejewski of Perronville and Lynn (David) Greenway of Delafield, WI; grandchildren, Tammi LaFave, Cody (Amanda), Cole, and Ethan (Sydney) Andzejewski; great grandchildren, Delila Rose, Keaton, Qwentin, and Remington; special friend, Dan Madalinski; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 2001; and all of her brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 19th from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 4 p.m. with Rev. Rick Courier officiating.

Burial will take place in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Perronville.

Obituary Preview: Bret P. Moody, 53, of Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 following a long illness.

He was born on January 15, 1971 in Kankakee, IL, son to Donald G. and Rebecca L. (Regnier) Moody. In 1982 their family moved to Escanaba where he attended Holy Name School and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1989. Bret attended Western Michigan University majoring in music.

Bret worked as a brewer for Hereford and Hops in Bay City for four years before returning to Escanaba, where he worked and eventually managed the Escanaba Hereford and Hops for several years. The Hereford and Hops group was like a family to Bret. Everyone who knew Bret, loved him and his infectious laugh.

He had a passion for music, whether attending concerns, playing his guitar, or just listening to all kinds of music. Bret also had a cherished guitar collection. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed talking about football to anyone.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed being at camp. He loved hunting, fishing, and doing all outside things. He loved all animals.

Bret embraced his faith and was extremely knowledgeable about scripture, biblical history and archaeology.

He was a beloved “uncle” to Evan, Ethan, Jackson, and Brynn and always attended the kid’s activities to show his love and support.

Among survivors include his mother, Rebecca Moody of Rock; aunts and uncles, Rebecca Yowell, Pat and Mary Moody, and Ron and Tamara Ponton. He is also survived by his beloved cousins, Amanda King and her children, Evan and Ethan; Mark (Erin) Yowell and their children, Jackson and Brynn; Michael and Ashley Lynch and their son, Owen, Christina, Caysie and Courtney Moody and Michele and Scott Richard.

Bret was preceded in death by his father, Don Moody; infant brother, Michael Moody; grandparents, Cliff and Bernice Moody; uncles, Marc Moody and Lonnie Yowell, former fiancé Jackie Snyder and cousin, Terry King.

Visitation will be on Sunday, April 21st from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Monday, April 22nd at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Perkins with Rev. William Ssozi officiating.

Obituary Preview: Ada Webber, 87, died April 8, 2024 following a brief illness. Ada was born September 16, 1936 to Marion & Emil Blazek in Gourley Twp, Menominee Co, Michigan. She grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and graduated from Powers-Spalding School in 1955. She married Richard Webber (deceased) and moved to Evanston, Illinois where her oldest daughter Susan (deceased) was born. They moved back to the Upper Peninsula to run the family farm where 6 children were raised where she remained after they divorced.

Ada had 3 sisters, Lorraine, Ruth Ann and Ella: 6 children – Susan (John), Joyce (Michael), Faye, Jim, Carol (Bob) and Daryl: 9 grandchildren: 4 great-grandchildren: numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

She is preceded in death by her parents Emil and Marion, sisters Lorraine and Ruth Ann, daughter Susan and granddaughter Dani.

She was active in the American Legion in Carney for many years.

Private graveside service will be at later date.

Obituary Preview: Donna Schmieder, 85, of Escanaba, passed away at her home on Monday, April 8, 2024.

She was born on November 7, 1938 in Escanaba and attended Escanaba Schools. In 1956, the former Donna Berthaume married James Ottensman and together they raised four children.

A lifelong resident of Escanaba, Donna was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She loved going to the casino, cooking, knitting, crocheting and often would sew and make beautiful clothing for her children when they were younger. She loved her family and friends and always enjoyed daily calls with them.

Among survivors include her children, Marie (Gary Pultz) Ottensman-Pultz of Littleton, CO, Michelle Ottensman of Gladstone, and David Ottensman of Colorado; grandchildren, Natalie, Melanie, Chelsey, Cody, and Jayson; three great grandchildren; brother, Wayne Berthaume of Escanaba; and two nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 17th from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba, MI 49829. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Timothy Ferguson officiating.

Entombment will be in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum.

Obituary Preview: Robert (Bob) Gunnar Pearson, 74 of Escanaba Michigan, passed away at home on March 27, 2024 of natural causes. Bob was born in Escanaba on November 12, 1949, the oldest child of four to his Swedish father Gunnar and Irish mother Kathleen (Katie) Pearson. Bob began his life on Main Street in Wells. Growing up in the house his dad built, then starting his own family there, eventually moving near the golf course in Escanaba where he enjoyed many more years with his family.

Bob joined the Army right out of high school and served his country in Vietnam. Upon returning to the States he began his career with Mead Paper, where he proudly walked across that bridge for 42 years. On April 27, 1974 he was united in marriage with Kathryn (Kathy) Gannon. Through their own set of life's ups and downs he adored her and they navigated life for over 50 years. Together they raised three children, who thought they were the sparkle of his beautiful blue eyes quickly learning otherwise when grandchildren came along. Bob and Kathy spent many years golfing with friends, cheering on the Pack, sometimes together and sometimes in separate rooms or cities. Always supporting their children in every endeavor, from dance class and basketball courts, to ball fields and the all time favorite, hockey rinks. He often worked long hours, many times seven days a week, but he never missed a game or event. Over the year’s Bob didn’t hide his struggles, but through it all his dedication to being a trusted provider for his family never waivered.

Being a Grandpa allowed Bob’s big heart to shine. When his first grandchild was born, everyone heard about her, which soon turned into stories about how “cool” they all were. They were his favorite topic and best gift in life. Grandpa Bob was truly enamored with each and every one of them. He was quickly in tune with each of their unique personalities, while carrying their hearts in his. He would be content to sit quietly holding a sleeping baby, or watching them grow daily over Facetime when distance came into play. Bob was famous for his nightly phone calls to wish “sweet dreams and God bless.” He took advantage of every opportunity, from library hour visits, to taking his seat back in the stands and became the kids default chauffeur starting with rides to preschool to last week’s pick ups at high school. He always had funny stories about what the kids would say, and the kids have some pretty great stories about him. Oh… and the treats, always snacks, lots and lots of favorite meals, treats and snacks.

Bob was an accomplished and exceptional poker player. You could catch him stacking up chips, wins, laughs and grimaces for over 30 years at the Island Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas and even some riverboats along the way. Bob was a back to back “Poker Player of the Year” at the Island. His greatest poker achievements include winning the “Tournament of Champions” and earning the highly coveted seat to the World Series of Poker not just once but twice. In 2005 he parlayed one of those wins to the World Series into 360th place out of 5,619 of the top poker players in the world, winning over $18,000.00. He also won the Island’s World Poker Tour finale, winning a spot to play in the World Poker Tour and in 2014 he won the Midwest Poker Challenge. He carried many lucky charms over the years and would often say “it’s better to be lucky than good”, with a smile that let you know he was talking more so about his experience in life than poker. The many amazing friends he made throughout life were dear to him, and will continue to hold a spot in the family’s heart.

For most, to know Bob was to love him, and if you were lucky enough to cross his path, you definitely have some kind of story to tell. Bob is survived by his wife Kathy and children Andrea (Jaimee) Tourangeau, Beth (Justin Berbohm) Pearson, all of Escanaba and Matt (Ali) Pearson of Green Bay, WI. Grandchildren Mary Kate, Jacob and Ella Tourangeau, Bryson Bougie, Finn and Lilee Berbohm, and June and Gunnar Pearson. He is also survived by his siblings, Susan Sinclair and Patrick Pearson both of Green Bay, WI and Michael Pearson of Escanaba, as well as good friends that happened to be his in-laws, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gunnar and Katie Pearson, his father and mother-in-law Robert and Thora Gannon, his brother-in-law Michael Gannon and his niece Sarah Gannon.

In keeping with Bob’s wishes a celebration of his life will take place with his friends and family at the Escanaba Country Club on Friday, April 5, 2024 beginning at 3pm. Military honors will take place at 4:15 p.m.

Obituary Preview: Nancy G. Green, 84, Munising, passed away on Tuesday March 26, 2024 at UP Health System – Marquette. She was born on October 6, 1939 in Escanaba, daughter of the late Walter and Marie (Micheau) Deneau. On October 7, 1969 she married Kenneth “Ken” Green.

Nancy graduated from Rapid River High School and lived in the U.P. her entire life. She Enjoyed doing puzzles, watching the NCIS tv series, but mostly loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Ken; two sons, John Green and Travis (fiancé: Elizabeth Johnson) Green; sisters, Theresa and Cassie; brothers, John, Don “Tiny” and Francis “Chubby”, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hazel and Linda; and brothers, Sonny, Roger and James.

Services celebrating the life of Nancy Green will be held at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Brian Allen Johnson, 58, a lifelong resident of Ford River, passed away Sunday morning, March 24, 2024 at Christian Park Village.

He was born on October 2, 1965, in Escanaba, MI, son of Walter and Rosemary (Nault) Johnson. Brian graduated from Escanaba High School in 1985.

Brian opened Paradise Audio & Video in 1990, where he installed remote car starters. He also installed and fabricated custom audio and video systems in homes and vehicles. Brian was a talented woodworker and designed many beautiful items. He was forced to retire in 2023 when he lost his vision.

His passion was music. He has an extensive music collection with every genre' to choose from when he'd D.J. a party or event. Brian enjoyed camping in his mini-motorhome. He put many miles on that little camper that he had customized. For many years he followed along with the World of Outlaw circuit throughout the mid-west. He was also a huge Nascar and Packer's fan.

Among survivors include his mother, Rosemary; sister, Ann (Steve) Rouse; brother, Michael (Tammy) Johnson; sister-in-law, Jamie Johnson; aunts and uncles, Wayne (Carol) Nault, Eileen (Mike) Hayward, and Jean Lusardi; nieces and nephews, Mark and Jennifer Rouse, Heidi Johnson, Katie Wangerin, Noah Johnson, Eli, Brettin, Seth, Dante, Audix, Daisy, Jack, and Journey Rouse, Genesis Liebhaber, Lyndon and Piper Jesse and Brinley Wangerin.

Obituary Preview: David Chernick, 87 passed away peacefully on March 23, 2024 at his home surrounded by loved ones.

David was born on September 30, 1936 in Escanaba to Russian Immigrants Nicholas and Mary (Warchena) Chernick; he was the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters and raised on the family farm in Harris, it was there that he learned, at a very young age, a strong work ethic, zest for knowledge and a passion for being in the outdoors gardening and tending to his land he coined as “Frog Hollow”. He enjoyed discussing politics and world news with his friends and family; however, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandkids quizzing them on state capitals and challenging them to learn the Preamble to the United States Constitution.

His most treasured time was spending quiet evenings on the back porch watching the deer and wild turkeys while sipping coffee with his wife and best friend Linda of 58 years. David lived his life with tremendous integrity, a vision for possibility and a razer-quick wit.

David served in the Army and was a lifelong practicing Catholic.

David is survived by his wife and children David Chernick, Ford River, Lisa Chernick, Long Prairie, MN, Nicole Larucci (Mike), McHenry, IL and Marc Chernick (Sheila), Escanaba and Janesville, WI, along with his grandchildren Stephanie Wiillete (Abby), Chicago, IL, Ana Chernick (Josh), Ishpeming, Blaine Chernick (Katherine) ,Wells, Viktor Hensen, McHenry, IL, Nicholas Sampey, Fargo, ND, Rory Hensen, Ty Hensen, Mason Larucci and Michael L. Larucci, McHenry, IL; and two great grandchildren Joshua and Hunter.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Nicholas, John, Wesley and sisters Ann Pinozek, Helen Ryan, Jean DeGrand, Barbara Phalen and Olga DeGrand.

Obituary Preview: David G. Sullivan, 80, of Escanaba, passed away on Monday afternoon, March 18, 2024 at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

He was born on July 20, 1943 in Detroit, MI, son to W. Gordon and Eleonore (Franzen) Sullivan. Dave was raised in Escanaba and graduated from Holy Name High School, class of 1962. He continued his education at Alpena Community College and then Northern Michigan University.

Dave served in the U.S. Air Force from May 13, 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1970. He served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base during the Vietnam War and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On August 31, 1968, David married Andrea Yanitsky in Escanaba.

Dave worked in a variety of jobs at The Photoart Shop in Escanaba. Over the years, he also was employed with Pioneer Kitchens, Dave’s Kustom Kitchens, City of Escanaba and then Walmart, retiring in 2014.

He coached track, football, and basketball at Holy Name Central Grade School and was head varsity football coach for Rapid River. He enjoyed following all the professional Detroit sports teams, especially the Lions.

He loved to spend a summer’s day sitting on his deck, chatting with friends, listening to music, grilling out, and tending his garden. He also enjoyed making models – especially WWI airplanes, and he held a lifelong interest in photography. He had a collection of Kodak cameras, some over 100 years old. In retirement he loved to read, especially learning about the history of Escanaba.

Dave was involved with Alcoholics Anonymous since 1981 and attributed his commitment and service to this organization as one of his proudest achievements.

Among survivors include his wife, Andrea Sullivan of Escanaba; children, Eric Sullivan (Tracy), Marc Sullivan, Carrie Sullivan (Mark Rew); grandchildren, Eleanor and Aurelia Sullivan; brother, Steve Sullivan; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents W. Gordon and Eleonore Sullivan; and brothers, Robert and Bill Sullivan.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 27th from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. Military honors will take place at 4 p.m. and the funeral service will immediately follow with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating.

Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Gloria Elna Porath, 98, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Christian Park Village in Escanaba.

She was born on June 29, 1925 in Hyde, daughter to Victor and Marie (Anderson) Oakman.

On November 21, 1942, Gloria married Ernest Porath.

Gloria loved being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking.

Among survivors include her daughter, Carol Gloria (Ronald) Houle of Escanaba; grandchildren, Conroy (Lucy) Houle and Kim Houle; two great grandchildren, MaKayla (Josh) Wiedenhoeft and Mary (John) Leaf; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ernest, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Regina Zappia and Sylvia MacDonald; and brother, John Manley Oakman.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 28th from 2 – 3 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Lewis Hague officiating.

Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Lucille H. Rian, 92, formerly of Wells, passed away on Saturday morning, March 16, 2024 at Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.

She was born on March 28, 1931 in Escanaba, daughter to Clarence and Emma (Kasbohm) Wright. Lucille was raised in Wells and graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1949.

On April 16, 1955, Lucille married Kenneth J. Rian at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba. He preceded her in death on June 17, 2023.

Lucille bartended at the Idle Hour Bar which her parents owned and operated. She also worked for the Red Owl Store for several years.

Lucille enjoyed going camping, taking casino trips, and eating out at different restaurants. Participating in bowling league was an activity that Lucille loved doing also.

Among survivors four sons, Michael (Connie) Rian of Rapid River, John (Jodi) Rian of Wells, Jim (Lori) Rian of Escanaba, and Tom (Lisa) Rian of Pine Ridge; seven grandchildren, Matt (Britini) Rian, Becky Rian, Brian (Kelli) Helgemo, Lisa (Andy) Kirt, Steven Olsen, Kimberly (Josh) LaBonte, and Sami Jo (Kris) Nelson; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Shirley Rian; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia (Duane) Schimmel; brothers-in-law, Arnie and Jim Rian; and sister-in-law, Mary (Lawrence “Lug”) Kidd.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Obituary Preview: William A. “Smitty” “Bill” Smith, 63, of Escanaba, passed away on Friday morning, March 15, 2024 at his home with his loving family at his side.

He was born on August 6, 1960 in Escanaba, son to William H. and Shirley M. (Erickson) Smith. Bill was raised in Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1978 and then continued his education at Bay de Noc Community College.

Bill began his career at Mead Paper in 1981 and retired as a train engineer in 2021.

On August 14, 1982, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl A. Jewell in Escanaba and together raised their two children, Jana and Colin.

Bill was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He was very involved in his children’s lives whether coaching baseball or youth wrestling when they were younger and during their adult years, he and Cheryl loved helping their kids with home projects, enjoying family trips, concerts, dinners, and other adventures together. He was a person that always helped others with a project or had one for himself. He accomplished the task of building several of their own houses which he enjoyed doing, including their current “retirement” home. Bill was a person that was so giving of his time and talents.

Bill was an avid golfer, enjoying many tournaments and rounds out on the golf course with Cheryl and friends. He was an active member of the Escanaba Country Club and enjoyed his time there, whether playing golf, helping out with a project, or enjoyed the “19th hole”. Bill also was a member of the Escanaba Elks Lodge 354.

Among survivors include his wife, Cheryl of Escanaba; children, Jana M. Smith (Matt McLees and his daughter, Millee) and Colin W. Smith (fiancee, Sara Finney); siblings, Sharon Smith, Michael (Vicki) Smith, Robert Smith, and Barbara (Rick) Wasalaski; mother-in-law, Marjorie R. Jewell; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, William B. Jewell.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, April 27th from noon – 2 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. A gathering and celebration of Bill’s life will immediately follow the service.

Obituary Preview: Clifford T. “Cliff” Coppock, 89, of Wells, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 11, 1934 in Escanaba, son of Harley and Henrietta (Davis) Coppock. Cliff was raised in Brampton.

On March 19, 1971, Cliff married Christine Peterson in Escanaba.

He worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 37 years as a switchman, retiring in 1991.

Cliff had a passion for golf and loved spending a lot of his time at the Gladstone Golf Course, often golfing in his “donut league”. He loved going to his camp and working with his tractor and riding his side by side. Cliff enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, playing his guitar, and spending time with his family and friends.

Among survivors include his wife, Christine Coppock of Wells; children, Clifford (Liz) Coppock, Dan (Karen) Coppock, Lisa (Matt) Rice, Tina (Jeff) Heiden, and Tim (Kerri) Coppock; grandchildren, Dylan (Kristyn) Coppock, Ryan (Abbey) Coppock, Nikki Gustafson, Dustin (Kendra) Witkowski, Amanda (Jesse) Zambon, Ally Heiden, Luke Coppock, Dale Coppock, and Kyle Witkowski; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Rocky (Barb) Tardiff; brothers in law, Mark and Mike Peterson; special friends, Gary and Pat Royer; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Donna Hilling and Caroline Coppock; son, Dale Coppock; father-in-law, Edwin Peterson; mother-in-law, Ruby Peterson; and aunt, Della Stowe.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 19th from 1 – 3 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 500 Ogden Avenue, Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. with Bishop Rayford and Sue Ray officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Michael Kilbride, 69, and Barbara Kilbride, 68, both of Escanaba, sadly passed away at their home of natural causes. They were found on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

Michael was born on August 9, 1954 in Grosse Pointe, MI, son of Thomas and Donna (Turney) Kilbride. He was raised in metro Detroit and moved to the Upper Peninsula to raise his family. Michael was a devout Catholic, an avid reader of old western novels, a Lions fan, and a history buff. Most of all, though, Michael was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.

Barbara was born on July 21, 1955 in Ishpeming, MI, daughter of Stuart and Barbara (Belstrom) Oja. Barbara resided in the Upper Peninsula for much of her life. She enjoyed scrapbooking, crafting, and gardening. She was also a music lover, particularly of The Beatles. Barbara had an infectious laugh and a sharp sense of humor.

Michael and Barbara (Oja) were married on August 20, 1977 in Michigan. They had lived in this area for 35 years. Michael was employed at the Island Resort and Casino for many years, retiring in 2021. Barbara had previously worked for OSF St. Francis Hospital.

Among survivors include their daughter, Jacki; grandchildren, Willow and Silas; Michael’s mother, Donna Kilbride of Mt. Clemens, MI; his siblings, Mary (Jim) Cooke, Michelle (Kevin) Kaptur, Patricia Catoni, Susan Hall, and Lillian Lee; Barbara’s sister, Mary Oja; and many nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

They were preceded in death by Michael’s father, Thomas; and his brothers, Mark and Thomas; Barbara’s parents, Stuart and Barbara; and her sister, Joanne.

Those looking to remember the life of Michael and Barbara are encouraged to attend the 4:00 pm mass on Saturday, April 27th at St. Joseph & St. Patrick’s Church in Escanaba. The intention of the Mass will be for the repose of their souls.

He was born on October 16, 1982 in Washington D.C., son to James C. and Linda G. (Sutton) Brown. Antonio attended Will C. Crawford Senior High School in San Diego, CA.

Antonio enjoyed making music, collecting sports memorabilia and trading cards, playing video games, and having fun with his friends and family.

Among survivors include his mother, Linda Gail Brown of Escanaba; daughter, Jasmine Ivy Brown; brothers, William Irwin Brown and Brandon Curtis Brown; niece, Onika Kori Brown; and many other loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Corey Brown.

Obituary Preview: James W. “Jim” Scheuren, 80, of Cornell (Boney Falls), passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.

He was born on March 10, 1943 in Escanaba, son to Morton G. and Muriel V. (Way) Scheuren. A lifelong resident of Boney Falls, Jim graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1961. He owned and operated his own dairy and beef farm for many years, until retiring in 2000. In his retirement years, he enjoyed raising white tail deer and elk.

On March 24, 1989, Jim married Constance J. Schnitzler in Escanaba.

Jim was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and planting and working in his garden and fruit orchard. He enjoyed bowling league, playing cards especially poker and Skip-Bo, and loved his cat “Socks”.

Among survivors include his wife, Connie; three children, Michael (Shannen) Scheuren of Escanaba, Eric (Alisa) King of Gladstone, and Jamie (Branden) Young of Boney Falls; grandchildren, Hunter (Jade), Faith, and Paityn; and great granddaughter, Maryjaine; siblings, Duane (Pat) Scheuren of Schaffer and Kenny (Marianne) Scheuren of New Berlin, WI; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 5th from 2-4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service and an opportunity to share a remembrance will follow at 4 p.m. with Pastor Tim Haugen officiating.

Obituary Preview: Edward “Ed” “Papa” W. Terres, 91, Escanaba (Danforth area) born in Negaunee, on October 20, 1932, son of the late Henry and Marion (Alderton) Terres, died Friday March 1, 2024. He graduated 1950 from Negaunee High School. He was the first *Home Delivery person in the Cambria Location for the Marquette Mining Journal. He was an Usher at the Vista Theatre. At the age of 17, with parents’ approval, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1950. His training was at Great Lakes and Naval Air Station San Diego where he became an Aviation electrician. He flew on the B 17’s stationed at Miramar, San Diego from 1950-June 1952. His squadron: Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VWI) was transferred to Barbers Point Honolulu, HI from 1952-1953. He was honorably discharged in 1953. He attended many Navy Reunions throughout the states over the years. He met his future wife, Carol, while watching Women’s Softball in Negaunee. Carol was the pitcher. Their first date at “camp” included dancing. They have enjoyed 69 years of dancing. They were married, June 11, 1955 in Wells, MI at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. In 1960, they built a home in the Danforth area where they lived the remainder of their life. Ed worked at Harnischfeger Corp, in Escanaba, in Production Control for 29 years. He also worked at the Great Lakes Credit Union, formerly the Harnischfeger C.U. for ten years. During that time, he served on several committees and also the Board of Directors, where he was President from 1962-1964. He had a strong belief in organized labor and proudly served as president of Union Local 289 of Escanaba from 1967-1975. He was a Life-time member of VFW Post 2998. Cub Master of Pack 405 of the Soo Hill Cub Scouts, Life-time member of the Wells Lions Club and served on many committees. He was awarded the “Melvin Jones Fellow Humanitarian Service Award”. He was an active member of the Highland Golf Club. He was honored to have the privilege of going on the Escanaba Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. in 2015. Ed enjoyed the fishing trips with friends to Isle Royale, loved to play cards, volleyball, hunting, being outdoors, golfing, Sudoku puzzles, working in his large vegetable garden, even winning ribbons from the U.P. State Fair for his cucumbers and green beans. Ed always finished his meals by telling his wife how delicious it was and especially the desserts.

He was a ‘Die Hard’ Detroit Tiger and Detroit Lions fan. He even organized a Fan Bus for many years to see the Green Bay Packers games. He loved sports. Ed, Carol and family enjoyed many years riding the trails on snowmobiles throughout the U.P. He also enjoyed following grandchildren in school sports and activities. Ed and Carol spent 16 years wintering in Tucson AZ with local friends and making many wonderful new friends.

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Carol of 69 years; children, Robert Terres, Sharon Neubauer, Daniel (Tracie) Terres, Edward Terres (Tina), Sandra (Tim) DeMars; Grandchildren, Alex, (Lindsay) Terres, Ross (Trang) Neubauer, Ryan Neubauer, Robin (Jason) Lieburn, Brittany Terres, Edward, (Megan) Terres, Josh DeMars, Matt DeMars; Great-grandchildren, Harper Terres, Addison & Jonathan Neubauer, Lucille & Olive Neubauer, Jack & Edy Lieburn, Kylie and Hunter DeMars; Sister-in-law, Gail (Swanson) Terres as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael; brothers, Paul and Fred Terres; and sister, Henrietta (Terres) Conradson.

She was born on June 11, 1972 in Escanaba daughter to Richard Grove and Donna (Williams) Pach. Shanon graduated from Escanaba High School in 1991.

On June 17, 2000, Shannon married John S. Green at the United Methodist Church in Gladstone.

Shanon loved animals and was a very kind and loving person. She enjoyed coloring, reading, and being with her family.

Obituary Preview: Rudolph “Rudy” “Butch” W. Wencl, 81, of Gladstone (Flat Rock), passed away early Wednesday morning, February 28, 2024 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 1, 1942 in Hermansville, son of Rudolph and Lillian (Roth) Wencl. Rudy was raised in Deep River, Indiana but often spent time at their family cabin in Hermansville during his childhood. Rudy graduated in Indiana, class of 1961.

While residing in Indiana, he worked with Local 150 Operating Engineers. In 1971, Rudy moved to Escanaba and was employed with Mead Paper Company. He worked in the boiler house and later on the switch crew, retiring in 2010.

On November 29, 1994, Rudy married Susan M. Solis in Iron Mountain.

Rudy had a passion for farming, horses, cows, and attending rodeos. He loved taking car rides and dropping in for visits with friends along the way. Rudy always helped others and could always share a good joke or two. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

Among survivors include his wife, Sue of Gladstone; children, Rudy (Nicole) Wencl Jr. of Colorado, Bob (Lori) Wencl of Menominee, Kim (Doug) Spawn of Minnesota, and Christine Kwarciany of Bark River; Michelle (Wayne Manninen) Quaghebeur of Escanaba, Ken (Jenn) Quaghebeur of Escanaba, and Nick Quaghebeur of Escanaba; grandchildren, Hannah (Austin), Kara (Allen), Emma, Colten, Chelsea (Eric), Ross, Hayly, Josh, David, Nickolas (Tahlia), Rebecca (Bill), Lauren, Sarah, Sasine, and Nathan; great grandchildren, Callie, Keagan, Kennadie, Paul, Marci, Olive, Patrick, Loyal, Bennett, Samuel, June, Nohlan, and Nadine; sisters, Lil Schultz, Bev Patton, and Sharon Sonaty; brothers in law, Don and Gary Solid; and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Shannon Marie Pifke, daughter of Alan and Susan (Greis) Pifke passed away at her home on Friday, February 23, 2024 after a lengthy illness.

She was born on November 21, 1975 in Escanaba. Shannon graduated from Bark River-Harris High School in 1993.

Shannon was a lover of all animals but her cats were her first love. She took in many strays over the years. She has two that love her dearly and were always by her side.

Shannon loved spending summers on Fortune Lake in Crystal Falls when she was younger. She always said it was her favorite place.

She is survived by her parents, Alan and Susan Pifke; sister, Kirstin Pifke; brother, Erik (Autumn) Pifke; her two fur babies, Journey and Toot; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Shannon was preceded in death by her grandparents, Adolph Pifke, Robert and Dorothy Magray, John and Irma Greis; aunt, Phyllis Schmidt; uncle, Richard Weissinger; cousin, Robin Weissinger; and several great aunts and uncles.

In keeping with Shannon’s request, there will be no services.

Sandy was born on March 28, 1963 in Escanaba, daughter to Wayne and Elsie (Nelson) Caron. She graduated from Escanaba Area High School and later attended Bay de Noc College. After working many years at St. Francis Hospital, she then worked at the Delta County Courthouse. Her final job being assistant building and zoning administrator. She was a kind and generous and hardworking woman who loved and laughed wholeheartedly. She was always there for everyone around her, putting them before herself. She was a point of light shining out to touch us all!

Sandra leaves behind her mom, Elsie Caron; older brothers, Wayne Caron Jr. (Patti Brunette) and Randy (Janice) Caron; older sister, Debra Novak; younger sisters, Connie Caron and Catherine Caron; nephews, Jason Novak, Brian Caron, and L.J. Caron; nieces, Nicole Vermote, Holly Caron, and Zoe Goddard; and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her dad, Wayne Caron Sr. and her nephew, Justin Novak as well as grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles.

A private burial will take place in the spring at Lakeview Cemetery.
